a blog to inspire the graphics

Is it my obsession with anything Zombie related, or is the whole genre really taking off as of late?

Eric Powell’s The Goon, is being developed as an animated feature film to be produced by ground-breaking filmmaker David Fincher, Blur Studio, and Mike Richardson at Dark Horse Entertainment.

The Goon movie has not been funded yet (fingers crossed it will be soon) as the team is currently looking for a studio to snatch up the project and finance production. If it’s anything to go by from the above proof of concept footage, it looks set to being absolutely amazing.

Just stumbled upon these amazing photographs taken a couple of years ago by Justin Quinnell, a renowned pin-hole artist from Cornwall, using a single sheet of photographic paper, a 0.25mm aperture pinhole camera (using empty drink cans), and an exposure of 6 months.

The photo’s are part of a collection of several iconic places in Bristol. The illumated lines darting across the sky represent the sun’s path over the six month, with broken gaps where the sun was blocked by clouds.

The Alamo Drafthouse is known as being one of the best theatre’s in America, with a real passion for entertainment and cinema; it doesn’t show ads before screenings and gives artists the chance to produce their own versions of posters for upcoming shows like the Total Recall poster here.
This August they’ve continued the trend for artworking events as it set’s out on a tour across America in their Rolling Roadshow. This time we’re treated to a whole collection of cult movies including the likes of Robocop, Dirty Harry, and Rocky, all of which are lovingly recreated by Olly Moss in his heavily influenced Saul Bass style with a nice choice of orange to really make the collection stand out as a vibrant and exciting whole.

Design and football, is there anything sweeter when mixing the two? …Perhaps a few things, but it’s a pretty good combo to say the least.
That’s one of the reason’s New York agency Hyperakt (who have done some other nice stuff including (one of my personal past time fav’s) info graphics for GOODmagazine) has done what every agency aspires to do, and mixed the two into one very nice result, a World Cup poster to celebrate the end of a great tournament.

You can put a “pledge” down for a copy yourself, then if enough people hit the target of $3000 worth of pledges – the posters will be printed when the World Cup finishes. So to help the promotion of good design, or to just have a nice memento from the tournament, pledge one here.

There’s been quite abit of love for London going around amongst the artist community, and with the current sunny spell we’re all enjoying in this awesome city, why not.

Mike Lemanski has done a mini series of graphic posters (available to buy from NewLeavesStudio) with a particular striking one based on London -

There’s also this fantastic time lapse video of the big smoke too, by photographer Alex Silver. Really captures the summery vibe.

kitkat_wimbledon2010_match

KIT KAT capitalized on their classic ‘Have a break, have a KIT KAT’ slogan with the recent Wimbledon epic becoming the longest lasting match ever.

Lovely lay-out, and a really nice touch of using the worn out tennis ball, I’m most impressed with how quickly the KIT KAT ad agency got this produced, just a day after the game finished.

Yesterday John Isner, finally defeated Frenchman Nicholas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, and 70-68, after 11 hours and five minutes spread over three days.

I wonder how many KitKat’s it would take to put the calories back on from the match?

Just been scoping this years awesome lineup for the 2010 Offset event in Dublin this October. One of the speakers is David O’Reilly who just blew me away with this beautiful piece of work -

A 10 minute about a troubled relationship between a Cat and Mouse set in a wonderfully abstract and surreal future.
The film won the Golden Bear for best short at the 2009 Berlinale, the Cartoon D’or and several other awards. In 2010 it was given a distinction of cultural significance by the German ratings agency FBW.

Wieden & Kennedy Tokyo Lab Nike Air Abuku

This great little project was created by Paul Jenkins, who with 78 old Nike trainers was able to conjur up the creative power from industry titans in developing their own Nike inspired trainer.

It’s nice to see that the designers took part in this simply out of their love to create and the results look to be outstanding, with efforts ranging from the above Wieden & Kennedy Tokyo Lab’s goldfish bowl-trainers to an animation from 8bit guru eBoy. Below are more of my personal favourites, but you can find the whole collection at the Nike78 site. It’s also looking like it will be featured for a showcase appearance at this years London Design Festival.

With the World Cup starting this Friday there’s been quite a few design related posts popping up across the blog world. This one caught my eye in particular; David Watson of TrebleSeven has given the classic wall chart a rather nice typographic treatement. Initially, I found it a little confusing, but the colour and graphic detail makes this far more appealing than anything else out there. It’s all for a good cause too, with all proceeds going to Soccer Aid | UNICEF. You can purchase the poster directly from TrebleSeven, and Magma.
I’m heading down to Magma this lunch time…

Still loving these retro re-styling posters from popular culture. This time, here’s Steven Finch paying homage to a few of the best comic’s; The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil, The Fantastic Four and The Watchmen. Minimal graphics, reliable Helvetica, and pastel colours are the classic ingredients for the distinctive look, and the additional detail of adding the worn, distressed effect give it a premium retro-styling.

Check out other similar work from Finch over at his blog, including the likes of X-Men, and The Silver Surfer.
